Couples and Relationship Therapy

Modern relationships are challenging, demanding, and evolving. Therapy is a safe space that can assist with navigating these challenges by strengthening, understanding, and repairing the most important relationships in your life.

I support couples and clients who want to:

  • Improve communication and strengthen connection

  • Explore values and relationship expectations

  • Re-build trust following ruptures

  • Work through conflict and attachment issues

  • Learn empathy and build active listening skills

  • Understand recurring problems

  • Navigate life transitions

  • Amicably separate and/or co-parent

My approach is evidence-based, including Schema Therapy, Gottman Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Motivational Interviewing. My practice is client-led, non-judgemental, LGBTIQA+ supportive, trauma-informed, and neuroaffirming. I welcome people from any cultural or religious background, and am open to working with relationships of all forms, not only romantic relationships or traditional marriages. This may include siblings, business partners, polyamorous relationships, co-parents, and others. I firmly believe in maintaining an open-minded approach to working with relationships and creating a safe space for all couples and individuals.

When I meet new couples and relationship therapy clients, my process begins with listening to your story and asking the seemingly simple question, “what has brought you here?” While some clients are clear and aligned in their reasons for attending therapy, it is common for couples and new clients to realise in this moment that they have different ideas about the purpose of sessions. As your therapist, it is my role to explore whether mutual goals can be identified and then introduce strategies for working toward those. This may involve the introduction of simple techniques like communication strategies or learning that it is ok to disagree without arguing. It may also mean diving deeper, including learning to understand each other’s attachment styles, exploring core beliefs, identifying deeply held assumptions, or navigating uncomfortable emotions.

Couples and relationship therapy will help you in more than just your relationship. The skills you learn in therapy will be helpful in all of your relationships, with friends, colleagues, family, and others. Improving self-awareness in your most important relationships will build insight into how you relate to people in other contexts, and will help you understand what is important to you. Therapy will help you better understand trust, connection, emotion regulation, and empathy. You may come to understand how these relational skills impact your life.
